Shanghai Shikumen Fine Cuisine is a dedicated Shanghainese restaurant tucked away on Hwy 7 in Markham, offering a slice of traditional Shanghai dining away from the city's bustle. The atmosphere leans toward straightforward and unpretentious, with a hint of old Shanghai charm visible in the slightly dated decor—a feature that adds to the authentic feel more than detracts from it. It’s the kind of spot where the emphasis is clearly on the food rather than fancy surroundings.

People who appreciate genuine, home-style Shanghainese cooking will find a lot to enjoy here. The menu reflects classic local favourites: dishes like the tender, mildly sweet braised pork belly (石库门招牌红烧肉) deliver rich, comforting flavours that call for a bowl of plain rice alongside. Pan-fried buns (招牌生煎馒头) offer a popular Shanghainese dim sum experience with their crispy, golden bottoms and juicy filling, great for sharing or starting the meal.

Many also come for the breadth of nostalgic dishes such as cold Shaoxing-style white chicken and Shanghai-style fried noodles, both evoking the culinary traditions of the region. The kitchen manages to balance flavour and texture well, with items like steamed dumplings and stir-fried crystal shrimp often noted for arriving fresh and well-executed.

The service is practical and attentive without being overbearing, and staff can converse in the Shanghai dialect, which adds an extra layer of comfort for native speakers looking for authentic connection. The dining pace suits both weekday lunches and low-key dinners for small groups or families. Because the menu explores some lesser-known Shanghainese dishes, it can be a rewarding stop for locals craving a taste of home or anyone curious about the city’s food heritage beyond more typical Chinese restaurant options.

Best times to visit tend to be outside peak weekends to avoid the lunch rush, allowing for a quieter meal where the flavours and textures stand out. The straightforward vibe and focused menu make it less suited to large celebrations but ideal for those who enjoy exploring regional Chinese cuisine in a relaxed, no-fuss environment.

  • Best for fans of traditional Shanghainese dishes and those familiar with the region’s food culture
  • Atmosphere is casual and reminiscent of old Shanghai dining rooms, with modest interiors
  • Good for small groups and family meals centered around sharing and sampling
  • Appropriate for weekday or early evening visits to avoid the bustle

Follow @bredgyeats for more food posts! No time or money to travel to Shanghai? That's alright, cause the next best thing is right here. These giant minced pork meatballs are ultra-tender and feature crunchy water chestnuts and a whole egg inside. The deliciously savory taste calls for a big bowl of white rice, mirroring the addictive pork belly, braised in a mildly sweet soy sauce with hints of ginger and garlic. The alternating layers of fat and lean meat are as tasty as they are visually stunning. What I set my sights on today was the fried yellow eel, which has a bouncy, meaty texture that's coated in a thick soy-based sauce, laced with vinegar, garlic, and scallions that are flash-fried with hot oil, with a generous dusting of white pepper, like a cherry on top. The soup dumplings have a robust and juicy porky filling, and the bean curd appetizer with 马兰头 is coated with a fragrant toasted sesame oil dressing.

My son was craving pork belly, and my Shanghai-born, Shanghai-raised nephew recommended this Shanghai-style restaurant. The food was delicious and truly authentic. The braised pork belly was rich and tender, the stir-fried pork liver was perfectly cooked, and the braised tofu with yellow croaker was silky and flavourful. The bamboo shoot soup cut through the richness nicely, and the Chinese okra with edamame was fresh and light. We also enjoyed the fried lotus root cakes and spring rolls. Of course, we had to try the salted pork with vegetable fried rice. It tasted like home. The restaurant has classic old-Shanghai decor and the servers were polite and friendly. Highly recommended if you want real Shanghai cuisine.

This is one of very few Shanghai dishes restaurants in Toronto. Disregard some of the reviews on the internet, we found it to be surprisingly good. The interior is a little bit out of dated, but it gives a feel of old Shanghai which we like. The service is better than we anticipated, efficient and simple, the waitress/ store manager can speak Shanghai dialect, which is a plus. The food we tried is the Egg Braised meatball $21.99 very tender and not too salty, the veggies inside is so yummy, although we never tasted egg inside meatball in Shanghai, we liked it. Stir Fried Pork Liver $18.99 is so good, it is so tender and the source is tasty, must try. Tomato and shrimp crispy rice crust $21.99, it is nice combination of sweet and sour, crispy and soft texture. House special pan fried bun $9.99 is what we aim for, consistently good. Steamed pork bun $9.99 is also very yummy, must order item every time. Overall, it is a very decent Shanghai food restaurant which is worth trying.

I always knew this place existed but for some reason never tried it. Decided to spluge a little and try this traditional Shanghainese fine cuisine restaurant. Ordered some very interesting but yummy foods and it came relatively fast and fresh We had this really interesting crispy rice tomatoes dish, check out my video! Their fried duck is also very good along with the drunkin chicken! The decor is meant to look dated and traditional and the chairs are super hard rose wood. Worth a try!
